The FDA has not approved any CBD product for animal use and has issued warning letters to CBD pet companies for making disease claims. The AVMA does not currently recommend CBD as a calming agent pending more data. The strongest published trial (Mars Waltham 2023) showed a single 4 mg/kg dose reduced stress markers during car travel and separation — modest, useful evidence, but not a green light to dose your dog without veterinary input.
CBD also inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes, meaning it can interact with many other medications. Discuss with your vet first, especially if your dog is on prescriptions for seizures, heart disease, behavior (SSRIs, trazodone), or pain.
